新加坡东部水域25日下午出现水龙卷，许多公众以为那是龙卷风，纷纷打电话到新传媒新闻，并提供了照片和录像短片。

大多数观众说，他们是在下午2点半左右见到水龙卷，这个自然现象持续了大约30分钟。观众形容，水龙卷以旋转的方式移动。

许多在菜市、东海岸、樟宜、新达城和波东巴西的公众，也都看见水龙卷。去年8月，圣淘沙岛岸外也出现过水龙卷。气象署表示，水龙卷现象是强烈的暴雨所导致的。

水龙卷是在水面上活动的一种旋涡，平均直径达50公尺，风速大约每小时150公里。气象署说，水龙卷在接近陆地时会迅速消散，而且本地每年都会出现几次，这种现象并不稀奇。
